Philistine Pressure and Israel's Lack of Arms

1 Samuel 13:16-22

Chapter 13
16 And Saul and Jonathan his son and the people who were found with them were sitting in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And raiders went out from the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned toward the way of Ophrah toward the land of Shual. 18 And one head turns the way of Beth-horon, and one head turns the way of the boundary overlooking the Valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 19 No smith was found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, "Lest the Hebrews make a sword or a spear." 20 And all Israel went down to the Philistines to sharpen each man's plowshare and sickle and mattock and ax. 21 And the sharpening cost a pim for the plowshare and for the mattocks and for three of the sickle and for the axes and for the setting of the goad. 22 And on the day of the battle, no spear or javelin was found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan, but there was found one for Saul and for Jonathan his son.
